Shovels have hit dirt on another water project in Texas.
Sundt Construction has begun work on the Pecan Creek Water Reclamation Plant expansion in Denton, Texas, according to a Tuesday announcement from the firm. The city of Denton awarded Tempe, Arizona-based Sundt a $92 million guaranteed maximum price contract in February for the project.
As part of the work, Sundt will build a new 75-million-gallon-per-day headworks facility along with a 30-million-gallon-per-day buildout utilizing membrane bioreactor technology, per the announcement. Additionally, Sundt will upgrade underground utilities and enhance parts of the site within the original plant footprint.
“Through advanced treatment solutions and strategic phasing, we’re delivering critical improvements while keeping the existing facility fully operational and untouched throughout the construction of their new improvements,” said Matt Bothun, Texas regional manager for Sundt’s water and wastewater group, in the announcement.
The expansion will help the wastewater facility keep pace with the region’s growth, according to the news release. Though the 2020 census listed a population of 150,000 for Denton, the city could be home to more than 200,000 people by 2030, according to the city’s economic development partnership.
Across Texas, water projects have steadily gained steam over the past 12 months. Last fall, Ferrovial announced it had won $721 million in water projects across the Lone Star State in Austin and Fort Worth. Meanwhile, Burns & McDonnell snagged an $80 million water reclamation job in the city of San Marcos.
More recently, Crescent Constructors, which was acquired by San Antonio-based Zachry Construction a year ago, won an $89 million treatment plant expansion in Lewisville in June.
