Dive Brief:
-
A Pennsylvania jury has awarded a woman injured in a car crash four years ago at a construction site $15.8 million.
-
Barring a successful appeal, Cheshire, CT-based Lane Construction Corp. will have to pay the woman, who suffered brain damage and was in a coma for five weeks after the 2010 crash. Her lawyer claimed the construction zone was dangerous and that previous accidents there should have led the builder to take safety precautions.
-
The driver of the speeding car that slammed into the one the woman was riding in was found negligent in a separate civil case.
Dive Insight:
The attorney general’s office lawyer representing PennDOT, which also was found negligent in a civil case, said the agency posted an adequate number of signs alerting drivers to a reduced speed limit. But the woman’s attorney said the department should have banned left turns near the work zone because of obstructed views.
