Dive Brief:
- Micron tapped Bechtel as the engineering, procurement and construction partner for the first phase of its $100 billion semiconductor manufacturing complex in Clay, New York, according to a Wednesday news release.
- Bechtel, a Reston, Virginia-based general contractor, will mobilize immediately at the White Pine Commerce Park site in Onondaga County, where Micron first broke ground in January on what will ultimately become the nation’s largest semiconductor manufacturing facility, according to the release.
- The announcement marks the next phase of construction activity for a project that has steadily progressed despite multiple timeline adjustments over the last year.
Dive Insight:
Providence, Rhode Island-based builder Gilbane won a preconstruction contract in August 2025 to prepare the ground for the site. That award marked the first phase of development at the White Pine Commerce Park.
In November, Micron then pushed back the expected opening of the first facility at the complex by two years to 2030, with milestones for subsequent fabs through 2041. At the same time, site prep work continued and the company officially broke ground earlier this year.
The partnership with Bechtel now advances Micron’s New York megafab closer to taking physical shape, said Manish Bhatia, executive vice president of global operations at Micron.
“We are entering an exciting new phase of construction,” said Bhatia in the release. “Our New York project will be home to the most advanced memory manufacturing in the world and will serve as a cornerstone of America’s leadership in the AI era.”
Bechtel plans to deploy modular strategies and digital-enabled construction technologies on the project, according to the release. The contractor said this integrated EPC delivery model will keep the project on schedule and streamline workforce coordination.
“This project represents more than the construction of a semiconductor campus, it is part of the foundation of America’s industrial future,” said Craig Albert, president and chief operating officer at Bechtel. “Micron is making a generational investment in U.S. manufacturing, and Bechtel is bringing its world-class execution.”
