Dive Brief:
-
Construction of a $2 billion fertilizer plant in northwest Iowa is back on track after weather-related delays over the winter, and the facility is gearing up to hire 2,200 workers this spring.
-
In its second year of construction, the CF Industries plant will employ 125 full-time employees once it opens next year, according to The Sioux City Journal.
-
Among the project’s more massive features are a 93-foot-tall primary reformer, whose base measures 61-by-48 feet; two 106-foot-tall ammonia storage tanks; and one of North America’s largest warehouses, measuring a third of a mile long.
Dive Insight:
Although construction is back on schedule, the project’s massive price tag grew by $300 million over the winter, as costs for labor, materials, and winterizing the plant against high winds, subzero wind chills, snow, and ice over a harsh winter pushed the price upward.
