Dive Brief:
- Minnesota-based general contractor Mortenson Construction is making room for a bigger and better headquarters right in its own backyard, the Star Tribune reported.
- The contractor’s plan includes the first phase of an expanded parking garage, followed by a second-phase of a 98,000-square-foot office building.
- Mortenson also has a potential third phase expansion in the works that would see two additional floors added to the new building.
Dive Insight:
Mortenson President Dan Johnson told the Star Tribune that the company is "outgrowing" its current space but that it doesn’t have a hard date set to begin construction. The Golden Valley City Council will vote on Mortenson’s application on June 7.
Mortenson is widely considered to be a leader in sports venue construction and is currently coming to a close on the $1.1 billion Minnesota Vikings stadium. The Minnesota United Major League Soccer franchise has awarded Mortenson the contract for its new $120 million stadium as well. The company will also build the $1 billion Golden State Warriors arena in San Francisco with Clark Construction.
Although Mortenson garners major attention from its high-profile sports projects, the company formed a new energy storage business unit late last year and became one of two Minnesota contractors in the large-scale battery storage market. At the time of the formation of the new energy business, the company said it would offer engineering, construction and integration services for energy storage systems "interconnected to local energy grids and behind-the-meter commercial applications."
According to the Star Tribune, Mortenson is the country's fourth-largest solar contractor and the third-largest transmission project builder. Earlier this month, the company ranked 18th on the Engineering News-Record's Top 400 Contractors list.
