As part of the firm’s ongoing commitment to engage and educate the next generation of leaders, American Global welcomed a dozen summer interns from top universities across the country, to the firm’s offices throughout the US and Canada, introducing them to the many benefits and opportunities available in the risk management construction industries.
During the 8-week program, which took place from June 1st to July 30th, interns participated in a structured curriculum that provided a comprehensive introduction to American Global's business and understanding of the broader construction industry. While each intern is assigned to a different team, all are exposed to a wide range of disciplines beyond their individual role. Weekly group video calls gave interns across the country a chance to meet, interact, and share their experiences. The program was designed to offer a comprehensive overview of the entire organization and show how they work together across teams, departments and geographies, illustrating the collaborative approach that sets American Global apart from other brokers.
The internship experience extends well beyond daily tasks. Students are encouraged to engage directly with
members of the broader team, other industry professionals and the communities American Global serves. Highlights of the program include a visit to an active construction jobsite with one of the firm’s risk engineers. This gives students valuable insight and a first-hand look at the type of projects and clients the firm supports, as well as the associated risks. Many interns also have the opportunity to attend industry networking events, while others participate in local philanthropic initiatives that reflect American Global's commitment to giving back. Together, these experiences provide interns with a broad understanding of the business while demonstrating the impact American Global has on its clients, industry partners, and communities.
The program concludes with presentations, where each student showcases the capstone project they developed during their internship. Projects are designed to address meaningful business challenges and explore areas such as data reporting, operational efficiency, market trends, cross-functional collaboration, brand initiatives, and construction and insurance risk analysis. Katie Wright, Senior Vice President of Career Development explained, “The capstone projects allow our interns to highlight their talents and strengths while introducing their innovative ideas to American Global leadership.”
The projects were as impressive as they were diverse. Below are a few project summaries, as described by the interns who developed them.
“I’ve analyzed and compared three different methods for calculating Excess credit using Injala and Power BI to determine which method provides the fairest and most accurate results. Through this project, I have learned how wrap-up insurance programs work and how payroll, exposure, and insurance rates are used to allocate General Liability and Excess insurance costs.” (Elizabeth Yarcheski, Project Solutions | NJ)
“I presented on General's Lab Innovation Program (GLIP), a province-wide Ontario Construction Innovation Accelerator that connects post-secondary students with industry partners to solve real construction challenges. I shared how I helped develop and scale the program through university outreach, partnership development, mentor and sponsor engagement, and event planning, while gaining experience in innovation strategy, stakeholder management, and cross-sector collaboration.”
(Tam Lather, Insurance | Ontario, Canada)
“My project focused on developing an interactive economic risk map that analyzes economic and construction-specific indicators to identify opportunity and exposure across U.S. markets. I created it after seeing an opportunity to connect economic data with strategic decision-making for contractors.”
(Jenna Necaise, Insurance | TX)
Katie Wright, who developed the internship program more than five years ago, is proud of how it has expanded and evolved since its inception, saying, “What began as a small internship program has grown into one of our most important talent development initiatives. It has been incredibly rewarding to watch our colleagues invest in these students and see so many of them begin their careers at American Global.” This year, the firm received nearly 700 applications for 12 internship positions, and we are proud to attract students of the highest caliber. Many of our interns have gone on to accept positions at American Global as full-time, part-time, or returning summer students.
