Note from the editor

The advantages of modular construction were on full display last year, as manufacturers stepped up en masse to help combat the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Several manufacturers reported pumping out rapid response medical facilities that were deployed as auxiliary hospitals in a matter of weeks during the early phases of the crises. Manufacturers erected fully operational field units in less than a month from order to completion for healthcare clients.

The benefits of operating in the controlled environment of a factory also stood out, as workers were more easily screened through single points of entry and could maintain social distance at tailored work stations along the assembly line.

Those developments didn't eliminate the challenges of adopting offsite construction practices on a larger scale, nor did they insulate companies from broader construction industry uncertainties. But modular construction isn't only a trend because of new pandemic realities. As industry executives point out, there is a deep industry history with the construction technique, and recent modular solutions offer more benefits than ever, proponents say.

Here are several facets of modular for construction pros to consider.

What contractors should be telling owners about shifting to offsite construction

What to consider before making the move to offsite construction

How codes help or hinder offsite building

The benefits of value engineering

Beyond emergency medical projects, demand takes a hit

New DPR facility will promote prefab research and technology
