HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — September 15, 2026 — TRUEBUILT today announced Talk to Takeoff, voice-activated takeoff for commercial estimation. Estimators can now describe a scope out loud to an AI assistant and have the measurements drawn onto the plans and priced against their own cost databases and historical data— without touching a mouse.
Talk to Takeoff is powered by the TRUEBUILT MCP server, an integration built on the Model Context Protocol, the open standard for connecting AI assistants to external tools and data.
This is not a chatbot bolted onto a PDF viewer. An estimator connects TRUEBUILT once, then says what they need: "Take off all the ceiling work on levels two through four and price it against our Dallas labor rates." The assistant reads the project's plans, creates components, draws the measurements onto the takeoff, and returns priced quantities — the work landing inside TRUEBUILT as if an estimator had drawn it by hand.

Bring your own assistant
Talk to Takeoff is not a single-vendor integration. Because TRUEBUILT built on the open Model Context Protocol rather than a proprietary plugin for one AI company, the same capability is available through whichever assistant a contractor already uses — Claude, ChatGPT, or any other MCP-compatible assistant, on desktop, web or phone.
Every assistant gets the same tool catalog, the same permission model and the same audit trail. Nothing is reimplemented per vendor, and nothing is locked to one.

Most AI integrations in construction software stop at answering questions about a project. The TRUEBUILT MCP server goes further, exposing the actions an estimator actually performs:
- Draw measurements on a takeoff — individually or in batches, through the same event stream the drawing canvas uses
- Create a takeoff from scratch by voice — including full create, update, delete and restore of takeoff containers
- Remove canvas elements and put them back — destructive actions ship with a native undo
- Run and follow the platform's AI jobs — the assistant can kick off long-running detection work and report back when it settles
- Read the full project model — plans at their latest revision, components with measurement types, areas, layers, quantities and the verbatim scale and calibration data
- Compare bid packages and price against live cost databases — labor, material and equipment rates maintained by the customer, not generic benchmarks
Why this is possible now
Preconstruction estimating has remained one of the last desktop-bound workflows in commercial construction. Most estimators can only reach their takeoff software on a single on-premise workstation, which makes collaboration on large bid packages difficult and keeps cost data locked in local files.
TRUEBUILT was built to break that constraint: it is fully cloud-based, so multiple estimators can build bid packages, takeoffs and estimates at the same time, working from shared cost databases for labor, material and equipment. Built for estimators who have to answer for the number
Letting an assistant write to a live bid package is only acceptable if every action is governed and reversible. The TRUEBUILT MCP server ships with that built in:
- Read-only by default — enabling the integration exposes reads only; write access is an explicit second step, granted by an organization administrator with per-tool toggles
- Confirmation contracts on destructive work — the assistant previews the change and sizes its blast radius before anything is written, and acts only on explicit confirmation
- Complete audit trail — every tool invocation is recorded with the tool used, the user, which assistant it came through, the outcome and duration; auditing is enforced at registration, so no tool can run unaudited
- Assistant attribution on every change — mutations are flagged as originating through an assistant, making "what did the AI change" a single query rather than a guess
- Permission-scoped by role — the assistant can only do what the signed-in user is already authorized to do, project by project
- Connection visibility and revocation — administrators can see who has connected, through which assistant, and when it was last used, and can disconnect any user at the source
- Rate limits and request caps — per-user budgets prevent a looping agent from overwhelming the platform

Talk to Takeoff is available now to all TRUEBUILT customers at no additional cost. An organization administrator enables the AI Assistant integration under Organization → Integrations, where the connector page provides the server URL and connection steps. Users sign in with their own TRUEBUILT account — no shared secrets or API keys.
The integration works with Claude and ChatGPT across web, desktop and mobile, including voice mode, and with any other assistant that supports the Model Context Protocol.
