- Specialty construction projects require attention to detail, minimal impact to environment and sophisticated systems integration
- “Concierge” and critical infrastructure medical projects will shape a large part of Pacific’s strategy for growth
The rise of “concierge style” medicine has transformed the traditional medical building into architectural statements – but with the addition of intensely sophisticated electrical, HVAC, soundproofing and other health and safety measures. In many situations, these critical infrastructure projects need to be executed on the site of functioning medical facilities – without compromising daily operations.
Pacific Construction has increasingly devoted its expertise and resources to the construction in the medical facilities category– both new construction and remodels – to the tune of $40M in projects in 2021-22, including two new ground-up hospital buildings currently under construction.
“We have been deliberate about cultivating a reputation as a construction firm that can complete a full range of highly demanding medical projects,” said Bart Friedman, CEO of Pacific. “Healthcare facilities require a high level of expertise, as the doctor’s offices of the past don’t resemble what’s needed in today’s environment. Our team establishes protocols to ensure that we’re not disrupting the important work of these facilities while we complete our project.”
Demand for healthcare construction projects continues to be strong, according to a report published in late 2021. The PSMJ Resources’ Quarterly Market Forecast survey of architecture, engineering and construction firms showed that since an early dip in 2020 (due to the advent of COVID-19), demand for construction and renovation projects has steadily grown each quarter.
“The medical experience is changing in the U.S., and our clients are looking for showcase offices, customized interior and exterior design and well-appointed features and improvements that can be implemented without upsetting the day-to-day operations of medical care,” said Chris Wales, Executive Vice President of Pacific.
Recent Pacific Construction projects include:
- Fit-out of seven projects for interior medical office and lab space with highly appointed finishes and precise scheduling – including a high-level, ground floor Manhattan location across from Grand Central Station.
- A ground-up hospital primary care clinic for the Minneapolis VA Health System, including procedure rooms, exam rooms, infection controls – all with a contemporary, first-class look and feel.
- University of Illinois Hospital & Health Systems renovation of medical suites, classrooms and lab spaces – all while the hospital was fully functioning during COVID-19. Construction involved heavy infection controls, environmental mitigation, and other protections to preserve the health and safety of patients and staff.
“We see strong growth in the healthcare construction market,” said Friedman. “Our understanding of healthcare construction, from ground up to the final product, provides us with the unique ability to help our clients understand their real estate needs in the always-evolving healthcare industry. Pacific Construction excels in high-demand, tight turn-around, high-profile situations, which makes focusing on healthcare a smart strategy for us.”
