Dean R. Mon, president and chief executive officer of D.R. Mon Group, Inc., MonGroup Properties, Inc. and its family of independent companies was elected second vice chairman of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) at its Annual Meeting during the International Builders’ show on January 11, 2018 in Orlando, FL.
NAHB's elected senior officers serve on a multi-leadership ladder. Mon will become chairman of the NAHB Board of Directors in 2020 and served as its 2017 third vice chairman.
"Total housing starts and new home sales are expected to increase in most markets in 2018. As second vice chairman, I will work with NAHB, its Board of Directors and policymakers in Washington, D.C. to ensure that the ongoing housing recovery continues to be strong," said Mon. "NAHB will ask the White House and Congress to preserve financial stability by maintaining an appropriate level of federal support for the U.S. housing finance system. Together, we will also work with lawmakers to guarantee that homeownership remains attainable and that safe, decent and affordable housing remains an enduring national priority."
“Dean is well-respected for his ability to get the job done,” explains John H. Kirkenir, president of the New Jersey Builders Association (NJBA). “He is relentlessly committed to safeguarding the industry and promoting the American Dream of homeownership.”
Mon has served in leadership positions at the Metropolitan Builders and Contractors Association of New Jersey (METRO) and NJBA for nearly 30 years. He has held every position in both associations from committee chair to builder VP to president. He also served on nearly every committee, including the Builders Political Action Committee (BPAC) which he chaired for three terms and continues to be actively involved as a trustee.
“Dean has been a tremendous leader throughout his decades of serving NJBA,” adds Carol Ann Short, Esq., chief executive officer of NJBA. “His contributions to the local, state, regional and national housing industry have been, and will continue to be immeasurable.” Mon served as president of NJBA in 1996.
Mon’s legislative accomplishments in New Jersey include the Code Flex Amendment to the Uniform Construction Code Act and the regulatory implementation of the Uniform Site Improvement Code via the Residential Site Improvement Standards (RSIS). Both pieces of legislation help to keep construction costs down by requiring that all building codes are necessary, practical and cost-effective.
Mon is a member of the NAHB Budget & Finance and Housing Finance Committees, as well as the Capitol Club of Build PAC. Previously, he served as New Jersey’s State Representative for NAHB, chairman of its Taxation Subcommittee of the Federal Government Affairs Committee and second vice chair of the Business Management Information Technology Committee. Mon also served as national area chairman for New York and New Jersey for three two-year terms where he tirelessly promoted the interests of the region’s building industry in Washington, D.C.
well-recognized for his contributions to NAHB, NJBA and METRO, Mon has been honored with numerous awards from these associations throughout his career. In 2014, Mon was named a senior life director for NAHB and received the Silver Hammer Award, as well as the Sponsors’ Choice Award from NJBA. The Silver Hammer Award is presented to an active member who has been inducted into the Builders Hall of Fame and has received the Builder Continuing Service Award. Mon received both accolades for a lifetime of dedication to NJBA.
A resident of Sea Girt, New Jersey, Mon attended the Newark College of Engineering where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970, achieving the rank of sergeant and did a tour of duty in Vietnam.
