Dive Brief:
- Safety harnesses saved three workers from injury, but a fourth fell, as scaffolding collapsed while they were working beneath an Interstate 95 bridge in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Monday afternoon.
- One worker said supporting cables snapped, leaving the men in the harnesses suspended about 100 feet above the New River and rail line as they hung from the highway bridge.
- The worker who fell with the scaffolding was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center, but he is expected to survive his injuries, officials said.
Dive Insight:
The workers saved by their harnesses were rescued by firefighters. One hung for about 90 minutes before they got him to the ground, however. A rescuer said it appeared to be a difficult work environment, with vehicles rumbling above and trains passing below.
