When engineering researchers from Rice University looked at how powerful hurricanes might affect bridges people would use to evacuate the Texas Gulf Coast, they found that more than a dozen spans on or near Galveston Island would likely suffer severe damage if they were hit by a blow that had a landfall similar to Hurricane Ike's in 2008 and packed 30% stronger winds.
The same group is looking at bridges in California and South Carolina.
