Dive Brief:
- Apple Inc. has received city council approval to build a 2.89-million-square-foot ring-shaped building as its new corporate headquarters in the city where it is based now, Cupertino, Calif.
- The project involves clearing 176 acres of land, including the removal of 26 existing buildings and has a target completion date of 2016.
- Apple will plant numerous trees inside and outside the "doughnut" of the four-story building whose walls will be almost entirely of curved glass.
Dive Insight:
The tradition-breaking design for the building seems appropriate for the company Steve Jobs founded, and he began the project before his death. The building was inevitably likened to some sort of spaceship, a ring landing in Cupertino from another plant. The building represents a solid commitment to the city, however, with construction spending, a vast reduction in the total building footprint on the property and a plan for more employees to get out of their cars and into mass transit for work.
