Dive Brief:
- A crane placed a load of building materials on temporary decking on the 12th, and currently the top floor of an apartment building under construction in Boston's Chinatown neighborhood Thursday, and the load caused the decking of floors 12 through six to collapse on top of each other.
- Two workers escaped with relatively minor injuries from the morning collapse at the building that is slated to rise 33 stories.
- Construction workers on the site told reporters that if the load had been placed over a beam instead of where it was, between beams, the accident likely would not have happened.
Dive Insight:
One of the officials on the scene on Stuart Street was Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, who is a former laborer and construction union leader. The collapse, Walsh said, was a reminder that "construction is a dangerous, dangerous job." OSHA started an investigation.
