• In San Jose, a worker fell three stories Wednesday while helping to unload sheetrock, the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health said.
• In San Mateo on Tuesday, a 9-foot fall killed a worker at a townhouse project, officials said.

Falls account for a significant proportion of construction deaths, and federal safety officials have made a priority of education about fall prevention and enforcement of rules. A spokesman for the California agency said its probe would look at what training workers had received, whether they had proper equipment and what procedures were in place on the job sites to try to prevent falls.
