Dive Brief:
- Turner Construction, the largest contractor in the U.S. by revenue, has launched First Equipment Company, an equipment rental and site services company, according to a Jan. 8 announcement from the builder.
- Prior to the news, New York City-based Turner used First Equipment to supply equipment and site services for its own projects. These jobs, particularly the company's large-scale advanced technology work, demonstrated the benefits of FEC’s integrated model, according to the release.
- With this launch, Turner is expanding FEC’s services to support projects across the U.S. and to more than 40,000 of Turner’s trade contractor partners, according to the news release. Turner will also offer equipment rental and site services to other general and trade contractors in the U.S.
Dive Insight:
FEC centralizes equipment rental and site services to help builders support, manage and source equipment, according to the news release.
Some of the company’s offerings include heavy machinery and operating equipment, temporary power, lighting, office and restroom trailers, fencing and site controls.
“By supporting the contractors working on our projects with a consistent, streamlined equipment experience, we help improve productivity in the field—benefiting our project teams and, ultimately, our clients,” Shannon Hines, senior vice president for Turner, said in the announcement.
The move comes as Turner looks to invest more deeply into project delivery functions, according to the release. Other such businesses include xPL Offsite, an offsite manufacturing firm; supply chain management brand SourceBlue; and the Turner Engineering Group, which is the contractor’s internal architecture and engineering arm.
Turner has also been working to advance technology among its ranks. Last year, it entered into a partnership with OpenAI to deploy the artificial intelligence giant’s flagship product, ChatGPT Enterprise, across its workforce.
