Navy might have an edge over Army in the annual college football matchup, with the Midshipmen leading the series, 62-55-7. But Army’s Black Knights will soon have an updated facility to play in as they continue one of sports’ biggest rivalries.
New York City-based Turner Construction announced its own team will carry out a $133.5 million renovation and modernization project at Michie Stadium in West Point, New York, for the United States Military Academy.
Turner will reconstruct the east stands of the 38,000-seat stadium behind the cadets’ section, where they typically cheer the team on decked out in their dress gray, “Long O” overcoats and black caps. The upgrades will provide 360-degree views of the field and surrounding Hudson Valley.
Turner plans to schedule its work around both home football and lacrosse games to allow the teams to continue to play while construction is underway.
“We are excited to begin work on this historic site and work with the Army and our partners to provide a special place for fans to take in the game and the Hudson Valley surroundings,” said Luigi Morfea, Turner construction executive, in a news release.
While the improved venue will host the majority of the team’s home games, the storied rivalry with Navy won’t likely be one of them. The game is typically played at larger, professional stadiums to accommodate more fans, with 2024’s meeting scheduled for the NFL’s Washington Commanders’ home field in Landover, Maryland.
The project will break ground in April 2024 with the demolition of the existing east stands and will be completed in time for the 2026 football season, Turner said.
