Turner Construction has turned dirt on a new $500 million hospital project in Broward County, Florida.
The New York City-based contractor celebrated the groundbreaking for the Baptist Health Sunrise Hospital, located in Sunrise, Florida, about a half-hour’s drive west of Fort Lauderdale.
The campus has been designed to support immediate healthcare needs, as well as long-term growth in the region, according to a news release. The facility will include:
- A 30-bed emergency department featuring triage areas and 24/7 emergency care.
- 100 inpatient beds, including 10 critical care beds, with capacity for future expansion.
- Four surgical suites with robotic-assisted capabilities and room to add additional suites.
- A 25,000-square-foot medical office building housing an array of medical services.
The hospital will also have its own central energy plant and mechanical systems. The plant will provide a dedicated and uninterrupted power source during wider scale outages, an important factor in hurricane-prone Florida.
Baptist Health Sunrise is expected to open to patients in 2029.
“Turner is proud to partner with Baptist Health on a hospital that prioritizes resiliency, advanced technology, and a patient-focused environment while enabling flexibility to grow alongside the community it serves,” Kevin McCormick, vice president and general manager at Turner, said in a Feb. 2 news release.
Healthcare construction has been a bright spot for builders recently. While data center construction has dominated the sector’s focus, healthcare builds also showed resiliency in 2025, though planning in the sector slumped to start 2026. For example, McCarthy Building Cos. recently highlighted the topping out of a $3.7B healthcare tower for the UC Davis Health in Sacramento, California.
