• In Lee's Summit, Mo., Thursday, a worker died when, people at the scene said, he was trapped by a collapse in a trench believed to be 7 to 10 feet deep.
• The worker apparently was connecting a residential sewer line to a main in the street when the accident happened.
• Other workers and fire officials were working to recover the body.

Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials have made trench safety a priority, and there have been reports in the past month of several companies being fined for not providing protection against cave-ins. Federal rules apply to excavations that are 4 feet or more deep.
