Dive Brief:
- Crews on a Toll Brothers condominium construction site in Raleigh, N.C., began the week by cleaning up debris that once was framing and walls until a fierce storm with tornado-like straight-line winds tore it up Saturday.
- Tolls Brothers said it will simply start from square one in that portion of the Cottages at Brier Creek in the northwest part of the city, where adjacent buildings that were farther along in construction survived undamaged.
- Toll Brothers has not said what the destruction and the resulting need for reconstruction will cost.
Dive Insight:
Raleigh building inspectors said they had never seen anything like the collapse happen. Toll Brothers issued a statement saying, “Structures that are in such an early phase of construction ... are not capable of withstanding the extreme (80+ mph) winds that were encountered on Saturday.” The company also said that even though the design withstood the storm where work had progressed further, it's hiring an engineer to look over plans and materials for extra safety.
