Dive Brief:
- The San Antonio area's transit authority, VIA Metropolitan Transit, has approved the design for a 90,000-square-foot project that will complete its Westside Multimodal Transit Center hub for conventional and rapid-transit buses.
- The station, featuring a circular green space at the center and mixed uses along with the transportation aspect is slated for groundbreaking later in July, officials have said.
- It is unclear from news reports, however, who will build the station, even though the VIA board's agenda for a July 24 meeting called for approving a construction contract.
Dive Insight:
Attention to the project focused on the design, which was done by a team led by EE&K architects. The project's "grand plaza" will cover a city block and be ringed by a metal and glass canopy that will be about 50% covered with photovoltaic cells. The station is next to a train station and may someday include rail access.
