Dive Brief:
- The EPA list of pickup truck mileage for the 2014 model year puts the Ram 1500 2x4 with an 3.0-liter EcoDiesel, driving its eight-speed transmission to the head of the class.
- The truck scored 28 mpg highway, 20 mpg in the city and 23 mpg combined – with the highway rating the best a full-size half-ton has ever achieved.
- Ram officials have to feel pretty good, too, that the 1500 with the company's 3.6-liter V-6 Pentastar engine came in second.
Dive Insight:
For 4x4's, the Pentastar and the EcoDiesel dueled. The EcoDiesel did better in city and highway tests, but when the EPA did the calculations for a combined score, the Pentastar won 23 mpg to 22 mpg.
