For contractors who are considering whether they should get involved in rail contracts, there’s one phrase to keep in mind: All aboard.
Over the past year, demand for passenger rail projects has spiked, and some of the largest infrastructure projects in the country, such as the $16 billion Hudson Tunnel project, are gaining national attention.
But not all is settled.
These projects are laying tracks even as the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is set to expire on Sept. 30 and lawmakers debate a new surface transportation reauthorization. As it stands, the most recent House appropriations bill included cuts for transit and Amtrak projects.
Political fights have also threatened to stall out projects such as Chicago’s $5.7 billion Red Line Extension, which broke ground in April. The Hudson Tunnel project has also been subject to a funding fight with President Donald Trump’s administration over DEI practices.
Despite the headwinds, demand for rail projects hasn’t ceased. Read on for recent large rail projects that have made the news.
