Dive Brief:
- Police in Manhattan have been unable to find Edward Garcia, 44, who worked for a company doing roof repairs on a building in the borough's fashionable Soho district and who appears in selfies on a phone that a 23-year-old woman found propped on a bucket on her fire escape, recording through her bedroom window as she showered one morning last month.
- The woman saw the blinking red light that indicates the phone was recording, and, furious, she grabbed it and found herself in a video.
- By the time police answered her 911 call, Garcia was gone and,not long after, so was his employer, fired from the job by the building management.
Dive Insight:
Police said they cannot say Garcia set the camera to record, but it was his phone, and they would very much like to talk to him about it. They had an address in West New York, NJ, but they have been unable to find him anywhere. A laborer working on the roof said, "This gives us a bad name" and added that other workers would have grabbed Garcia if they had known what was going on.
