Dive Brief:
- Broward County, Fla., commissioners have put repairs to their Main Library building in Fort Lauderdale on hold, saying the company hired to replace windows and doors, RC Aluminum Inc., missed its deadline from a 2011 contract and was endangering workers and patrons.
- The county gave RC Aluminum a $10 million contract as part of repairs and reinforcement needed after Hurricane Wilma in 2005.
- Records show the county issued 19 notices to the contractor about alleged rule violations, including debris almost hitting people and a door to a construction area being left open when no windows had yet been installed.
Dive Insight:
The county has turned the job over to Liberty Mutual Surety, the backer for RC Aluminum's work. There is a March deadline approaching for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to pick up 75% of the cost of repairing the building and strengthening it against future hurricanes. The building has looked like a construction project for years, and the county claims RC Aluminum is responsible for water intrusion, mold, mildew and other problems.
