Dive Brief:
-
A partially built senior center and apartment complex at a large construction site in Baltimore burned to the ground Monday night during riots. No one was injured in the fire.
-
The Baltimore Sun called the three-alarm blaze “a huge, raging fire visible from blocks away.” Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said Tuesday that officials have not determined whether the fire, on the city’s east side, was related to the rioting, which was primarily on the west side. Baltimore’s deputy fire chief told a local CBS station the department was “99 percent sure” the fire was linked to the riots.
-
The pastor of the Southern Baptist Church, which owns the property and is located across the street, said he plans to rebuild the $15 million project. “This fire is going to spark a revival,” he told The Sun.
Dive Insight:
The riots erupted after the funeral of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, who reportedly died April 19 from injuries he suffered while in police custody. Demonstrators burned and looted stores, and at least 15 police officers were injured during the protests.
The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development had granted $200,000 toward the community center, which was started in 2006, according to The Sun. The city of Baltimore had also lent $15 million to the apartment complex project.
