Dive Brief:
- Knute Rockne thought big for Notre Dame football, and the university is doing the same with a 750,000-square-foot addition of three buildings to Notre Dame Stadium to bring the school's academic and social lives literally into contact with its athletic heritage.
- Notre Dame has unveiled a design that will attach three buildings – on the east, south and west sides – onto the stadium to provide classrooms, space for three academic departments and room for student organizations, career counseling and recreation and seating on their upper sides facing the football field.
- The project will add only 3,000 to 4,000 seats to the 80,000-seat facility, but it is the biggest building project Notre Dame has ever undertaken.
Dive Insight:
Barton Marlow Co. has been selected to construct the $400 million job, which the school calls the Campus Crossroads Project. Multiple architects have designed various pieces of the project. By being on three sides of the oval, the new buildings will leave open the view to the north of the mural known far and wide as "Touchdown Jesus."
