Award: Shipyard infrastructure
Value: $150 million
Location: Kittery, Maine
Client: Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command
As the U.S. Navy pushes forward with shipyard modernization, it is once again turning to familiar contractors to get the job done.
The Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command selected a joint venture of Dallas-based AECOM and Edmonton, Alberta-based Stantec for a five-year, $150 million architect-engineer contract to upgrade the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, according to an AECOM news release. The firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract primarily focuses on the modernization of dry docks, production facilities, utilities and waterfront infrastructure, according to a NAVFAC news release.
“This award highlights AECOM’s technical leadership and reinforces our role in delivering infrastructure that strengthens fleet readiness and operational resilience,” Karl Jensen, executive vice president of AECOM’s Governments business, said in the release.
The contract includes a base year and four option years, providing up to 60 months of performance or until the maximum contract value is reached, whichever occurs first. The AECOM and Stantec JV competitively procured the contract through the sam.gov website in accordance with federal architect-engineer selection procedures, according to NAVFAC.
The project supports the Navy’s ongoing modernization of its public shipyards through the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program, an initiative focused on the integration of infrastructure, facilities and industrial equipment investments, according to NAVFAC.
Other projects under the initiative include work on the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Hawai’i, the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Washington state and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia, according to the AECOM release.
AECOM recently completed an area development plan for the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, adding to its near 100-year relationship with the Navy, according to the firm.
Stantec has already worked with NAVFAC at all four shipyards. Via the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program, the Canadian firm is currently under contract to provide services at the Pearl Harbor Shipyard and the Puget Sound Shipyard.
