Nashville International Airport has unveiled its extended Concourse D, the first major project completed under its $3 billion New Horizon development plan, according to a news release from the airport. The total cost of the build was $247 million, per the Nashville Business Journal.
Greeley, Colorado-based Hensel Phelps and Denver-headquartered Fentress Architects made up the project’s design-build team. Construction involved 715 total workers, 79% of whom were local, according to the release. Hensel Phelps also built the original Concourse D and Terminal Wings project.

The 161,854-square-foot concourse extension opened to the public on July 8 with five new gates for a total of 11, a moving walkway and eight restaurant and retail outlets, per the release. It also features three public art pieces and the airport’s first outdoor terrace, which offers passengers views across the airfield and towards downtown Nashville.

In 2022, the airport began the design phase for New Horizon, its second major expansion, in order to meet the increasing passenger demand spurred by Nashville's unprecedented growth, according to the project website.
The extension and other New Horizon projects are essential to enabling the airport to support a projected 40 million future annual passengers, said Doug Kreulen, president and CEO of Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, in the release.
“The completion of the Concourse D extension—on time and under budget—not only marks a major milestone for the New Horizon program, but it also gives us the space and resources needed to turn our attention to upcoming projects, such as the demolition and reconstruction of Concourse A, the creation of a Central Ramp and improved terminal roadways,” said Kreulen.
The other New Horizon work is slated to wrap by 2029.
