Dive Brief:
-
The National Association of Homebuilders has updated its profile of the impact of homebuilding on a “typical” local community, noting the residential construction industry generates $28.7 million in local income, $3.6 million in taxes and other revenue for local governments, and 394 jobs in a typical community during the year in which the construction takes place.
-
In addition, the ongoing impact of residential construction once the homes are built and occupied include: $4.1 million in local income, $1 million in taxes, and 69 local jobs, NAHB said.
-
Residential remodeling also has an outsized impact on a local economy, the report said. A typical community whose residents spend $1 million on remodeling will generate $841,000 in income and $71,000 in taxes, and will create 11.5 local jobs in one year, NAHB said.

Developers often use the numbers—and customized reports for specific cities and communities that NAHB produces for a fee—to help them get government approval for individual projects and to counter local anti-growth proposals.
