Dive Brief:
- The London Eye giant observation wheel became a national landmark in England, and now British architecture firm Marks Barfield Architect has designed an up-and-down attraction for the city of Brighton.
- Called "i360," the tower is to rise 532 feel above the Brighton beachfront and carry a surrounding glassed-in observation pod holding up to 200 people up to 450 feet for a view of the city, the English Channel, the nearby city of Hove and the countryside around them.
- Among the companies signed on for the project are reportedly Poma of France for cable lifts, Jacobs Engineering from the U.S. and Hollandia, based in the Netherlands, as the steel provider.
Dive Insight:
Brighton and Hove have put up £40 million for construction, according to the BBC, though the architect estimates the cost at £35 million. The architects say the tower, with its pod heated in winter and air-conditioned in summer, is scheduled to open in 2016.
