Dive Brief:
- A South Carolina medical group, Palmetto Primary Care Physicians, is joining up with Equity Inc. of Columbus, Ohio, to carve out a medical presence in Nexton's 4,500-acre medical campus. The project will include doctors' offices, an ambulatory surgery center, a 24-hour center for urgent care, housing for 170 senior citizens, and a hotel targeting patients and families.
- The two buildings in the center of the campus will be 150,000 square feet each, and Palmetto reportedly has more than 200 doctors who have said they will move in.
- The campus is at Interstate 26 and Highway 17A in Summerville, outside Charleston. Palmetto's piece of Nexton is estimated to cost $135 million.
Dive Insight:
Equity's CEO, Steve Wathen, says the deal is going to "set a new national standard" for care that is affordable. The first part of Palmetto's piece of Nexton is to start this summer. The overall Nexton project is being developed by MeadWestvaco Corp.’s Community Development and Land Management Group.
