Dive Brief:
- General Motors announced that it has raised prices on 2014 model GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks, which had debuted at the same price as the 2013 version (Silverado 1500 regular cab) or almost the same (Sierra).
- The latest increase, $1,500, brings increases to nearly $2,100 since the 2014s were released, and applies to trucks made on Oct. 7 and since then, though GM says it is offering incentives of $1,000 cash back through Oct. 31, plus another $500 on some popular lines.
- With the changes, the base prices are now $26,670 for the Chevy and $27,170 for the GMC version.
Dive Insight:
Analysts say that the price increases are not complicated to explain. Truck sales are up, the models are selling fairly well now that contractors and builders are feeling they can replace aging vehicles, and there is currently more demand than supply. The incentives give GM a marketing tool as it looks to make up ground lost to Ford in September, when GM sales slipped 8.2% and Ford won hands down with F-150 sales.
