Dive Brief:
- Fans of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture – and anyone else who wants to make a trip to Racine, Wis., – can get a look this summer inside one of two high-rise designs that were built, but never open to the public.
- The 15-story S.C. Johnson Research Tower, for which Wright employed a tree-like support structure with a "taproot" foundation, will be open for guided tours from May into September.
- The company that counts Raid, Glade and Pledge among the brands that used the tower from its 1950 opening until 1982, when it moved researchers out rather than do required safety upgrades that would have ruined the design.
Dive Insight:
The building has rounded corners, while the inside alternates round and square floors. The Johnson company says Wright's innovative style inspired scientists who worked there. The Friday and Saturday tours will include other Johnson buildings, including a Wright-designed headquarters building done in his more widely known horizontal style.
