- Federal prosecutors Wednesday arrested the mayor of Charlotte, N.C., on charges of public corruption.
- Patrick Cannon, who has been mayor for five months but was first elected to the city council in 1993, was accused of taking more than $48,000 in airline tickets, a trip to Las Vegas, use of a luxury apartment in Charlotte and $20,000 in cash in a briefcase brought to his city office last month.
- Prosecutors alleged that Cannon had agreed to help undercover agents, who he thought were real estate investors, with zoning changes, parking and other development issues.

Cannon surrendered to U.S. Marshals when he learned there was an arrest warrant for him, and news outlets said he resigned as mayor Wednesday evening. The investigation in Charlotte began in 2010 and focused on Cannon in 2011, when he was a council member and mayor pro tem, an FBI agent said in an affidavit included in court papers.
