Dive Brief:
- Dubai is planning to demonstrate that spending a week somewhere need have nothing to do with going outdoors just because you leave your hotel to shop, see a movie or get a massage.
- Dubai Holdings, which reportedly is owned by the emirate's ruler, Mohammed Bin Rashid, says it will construct Mall of the World with 8 million square feet enclosed and air-conditioned.
- The plan calls for an entertainment area based on Broadway in New York, a shopping area based on Oxford Street in London, the world's largest indoor park, 20,000 hotel rooms and "wellness district" of 3 million square feet.
Dive Insight:
The plan sounds audacious, but Dubai has the world's tallest skyscraper, so why not go wide this time? Rashid said, according to Dubai Holdings, "We announced recently that we plan to transform Dubai into a cultural, tourist and economic hub for the 2 billion people living in the region around us; and we are determined to achieve our vision."
