One of the top commercial contractors of 2025 began site work last month on a healthcare facility project in Modesto, California.
DPR Construction, a Redwood, California-based general contractor, broke ground Jan. 15 on a new Advanced Cancer Center and Care Complex for Sutter Health, a Sacramento, California-based not-for-profit health system. The builder will work under a collaborative integrated project delivery approach, which enables a better design and construction process, Abe Sipes, Sacramento business unit leader at DPR, told Construction Dive.
The method joins parties involved in the design, fabrication and construction aspects of a project together under a single agreement. HGA, a Minneapolis-based commercial architecture firm, designed the project.
The collaboration will result in significant enhanced efficiency, said Sipes. He added the DPR team is using lean construction methods to deliver the facility.
Once complete, the estimated $380 million project will feature four stories and 165,000 square feet of modernized, patient-centered space, according to a Sutter news release.
“This new complex will serve as a destination for care in the Central Valley, offering advanced cancer services alongside outpatient care and a surgery center,” said Warner Thomas, president and CEO of Sutter Health. “It ensures patients can count on coordinated, high-quality care across multiple specialities all in one location.”
The first and second floors will house the Advanced Cancer Care Center. The center will be an all-inclusive location offering clinic visits, access to numerous cancer screenings, infusion and radiation therapy, imaging, lab, pharmacy and multiple complementary therapies, according to the release.
On the third floor, DPR will add the ambulatory surgery center. The space will include four operating rooms, four procedure rooms and additional space for future expansion. This will be the first Sutter ambulatory surgery center in Modesto, according to the release.
Finally, the fourth floor will feature more than 25 clinicians and 50 exam rooms. DPR expects to open the facility in 2029.
