Bechtel Corp., the largest U.S. construction and civil engineering company, is digging up Charlotte, NC, to install the second wave of Google’s high-speed, fiber-optic television and Internet service. Google told WSOC TV that fiber service could boost home values by as much as $5,000.

The search engine giant's new Google Fiber business started in Kansas City in 2012 and expanded to Austin, TX, and Provo, UT, in 2013. After Charlotte, the company will build the service in Atlanta, Raleigh, Nashville and Salt Lake City.

The Charlotte installation will involve laying 3,200 miles of cable and preparing 19 service locations. Google has said its service is up to 100 times faster than broadband.

Google will hire approximately 300 construction workers for the Charlotte project, according to The Charlotte Observer. A company spokesman told the newspaper no schedule for completing the project has been determined. AT&T has upped its high speed service and Time Warner is planning an upgrade.
