- Diesel vehicles are coming on strong in the U.S., a study finds, and Exxon Mobil said it expects diesel to be the No. 1 transportation fuel by 2020.

The need to raise average fleet mileage for the automakers is part of what is driving diesel and hybrid engines to the fore. Exxon Mobil's forecast gives diesel 70% of the fuel market by 2040. Natural gas will get from 1% now to 4% then, the projections say.
