Dive Brief:
- A worker got buried in sand, dirt and asphalt when a trench collapsed at a sewer-line construction site in Ipswich, Mass., north of Boston.
- It took workers about two hours to free William Gallagher, 40, who was flown to a Boston hospital but was expected to recover from leg injuries.
- The general contractor, The Congress Companies, said a subcontractor was working on that part of the site and it had sent safety officials to determine what happened.
Dive Insight:
It was not clear right after the incident if Gallagher was working in the trench or was near it and fell in. There also was no immediate word on whether the trench was deep enough to require safety shoring or if any was in use. In addition to being buried, Gallagher's legs had become wrapped around a gas main that was in the trench.
