Dive Brief:
- Terex Corp. says it is finding that CC 2500-1 cranes being sold in a few Asian countries as used equipment under its former Demag brand are counterfeit equipment.
- Klaus Meissner, director of product integrity for the company, says nine or 10 are known to have been sold, and the knock-offs are definitely coming from China.
- The phony lattice-boom cranes have a combination of old and new parts not designed to work together, poor weld quality, inferior steel and tracks that do not fit properly.
Dive Insight:
Terex had to deal with a similar scheme two years ago. The company says it is worried about the machines failing and injuring people as much as its intellectual property rights. So far, there are no reports of anyone trying to pass off rigs as new equipment, but Terex worries that people looking for used equipment might not be having it inspected by a competent professional who could tell it was not a Terex product, either.
