Dive Brief:
- In Sao Paulo, Brazil, where a crane collapsed on Nov. 27 and killed two workers, construction has been allowed to resume — as long as it does not require using a crane.
- In Curitiba and Cuiaba, construction projects cannot make what was to have been a year-end deadline for finishing new facilities for the 2014 World Cup, so the sport's governing body, FIFA, gave up on the deadline.
- The Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo, also known as Itaquerão stadium, was 94% done before the crane collapsed while putting a final roof section into place, but the other facilities were not that close.
Dive Insight:
Sao Paulo and the national government say no one is going to be doing any heavy lifting at the Corinthians venue until they have finished an investigation that includes an inspection of all operating procedures and all nine cranes still operable, both movable and tower cranes. It's unclear how severely that limits work, but it obviously cannot help.
