Dive Brief:
-
Four months after Swedish construction giant Skanska stopped work on a 32-story, steel-framed tower touted as the world’s tallest prefabricated structure, crews are back on the job site and local TV station NY1 is reporting that the developer, Forest City Ratner, plans to finish the building.
-
Amid dueling lawsuits over the botched initial effort to build the tower, Forest City has reportedly bought out Skanska and is hiring back the original, 150-member crew.
-
The high-rise is to be the main attraction in a planned 22-acre, 3,000-unit Atlantic Yards complex, which eventually will include 17 commercial and residential towers next to Barclays Center sports arena in Brooklyn. None of the other buildings will use modular construction.
Dive Insight:
The on-again project could renew hope that modular construction is viable for large-scale projects. Factory-built structures are said to save time and money , as they have the potential for fewer delays and cost overruns.
