Dive Brief:
- Glastonbury, CT-based contractor Gemma Power Systems has begun construction of an 829-MW power station in Montgomery, PA, for Panda Power Funds.
- The unit, known as Panda Patriot, is a gas-fired unit that sits above the Marcellus Shale formation and is expected to cost more than $800 million to build. It will also have an average construction workforce of 200 and a peak headcount of 500 during the project.
- Substantial construction completion is scheduled in spring 2016.
Dive Insight:
The plant is expected to have minimal impact on the Western Branch of the Susquehanna River because the generator is to be air-cooled. Developers estimated it will put $5.85 billion into the Pennsylvania economy during its first decade of operation.
