Dive Brief:
- A break down of last week's federal report on construction employment shows that 197 of the country's 339 metro areas had more people working in the industry in March 2014 than they had the year before.
- The other side of the coin is that 89 metro areas lost jobs, and 55 are still stuck where they were in March 2013.
- The Los Angeles area gained the biggest number of jobs, 10,000, and Monroe, Michigan's gain of 900 was a 43% jump. Gary, Indiana, took the hit for both largest number of job losses and largest percentage: 5,400 and 28%.
Dive Insight:
It is easier in boom times to take a "win some, lose some" approach to the numbers. With the recovery going the way it has, it seems more important to be able to say gains outnumbered losses. But markets are always shifting, and it's never all winners.
