Dive Brief:
- A 63-foot tractor-trailer loaded with a tracked excavator went from parked to purloined Tuesday night in Brooklyn, and all in about five minutes.
- At least three men cut through a padlock holding a gate closed at S. Construction Corp., started up the tractor and drove away, which police know because a security camera on a nearby business captured the Tuesday night theft.
- Company owner Ari Steinman was very surprised when he came to his yard the next morning and found an empty space where the equipment had been, but he said he's also worried about what the thieves plan to do with the machine.
Dive Insight:
The video camera was too far away to make out the men's features under the street lighting, but it was able to see them stop cutting the lock and hide when a police car went by with lights flashing, but it was on its way elsewhere and apparently had not seen sparks flying from the lock-cutting operation.
