Dive Brief:
- Indications from Washington are that Congress is making some progress on a way to keep the Highway Trust Fund from going dry this summer, although progress appears to be following disparate paths.
- In the Senate, there is a bill but it barely got to the nuts-and-bolts stage of legislating -- markup in the Senate Finance Committee -- on Friday when minority Republicans asked majority Democrats to hold off while they kept working on their alternative plan.
- In the House, controlled by Republicans, the Ways and Means Committee is going to start getting into the nitty-gritty of another proposal there after the chamber has its Fourth of July break, Committee Chairman David Camp said.
Dive Insight:
The critical time for the trust fund is the end of the current fiscal year on Sept. 30, or perhaps a little earlier. Without some way to put money into the fund, it will be out of resources for new highway projects, and that would seriously cramp states' efforts to repair and expand their facilities.
