Toronto-based Mattamy Homes builds in Arizona, Florida, Minnesota, and the Carolinas, but Chief Operating Officer Brian Johnston told The Globe and Mail: "We're only scratching the surface of where we could be in the U.S. We're making more money every year, but we're not where we want to be."

The 37-year-old company builds suburban, single-family detached homes and townhouses, and recently entered the high-rise condominium and infill markets in Canada. In December, it bought the Canadian operations of Top 10 U.S. homebuilder Taylor Morrison for $284 million.

Mattamy has increased its presence in Phoenix, where it has branded itself as "the biggest builder you’ve never heard of."
Although the company began buying U.S. land a decade ago, it held off on developing it because of the housing market crash. Now, the firm is making an effort to ride the market's recovery by expanding its U.S. foothold. In fact, Mattamy last year spent $86 million for about 10,000 acres in Sarasota, FL, where the firm plans to build 25,000 homes over 25 years.
