Dive Brief:
- An order for utilities to come up with 1,500 megawatts of power to replace a shut-down nuclear plant might be expected to spur construction, but that does not appear to be the case in California.
- The state Public Utility Commission has ordered Southern California Edison (SCE) to procure 500-700 MW and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) to come up with 500 to 800 megawatts by 2022.
- At least 600 of those megawatts have to come from renewable or other non-traditional sources.
Dive Insight:
The ability for utilities to wheel power across the nation more flexibly has been good for the power industry, but it decreases the likelihood of a utility letting construction build more power plants.
