Dive Brief:
- Legislation signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown puts $ 2 billion over 10 years into two programs that help owners improve diesel emissions and reduce pollution.
- The Carl Moyer Memorial Air Quality Standards Attainment Program has paid to replace or upgrade 48,000 diesel engines since it began in 1998.
- The program brought together advocates for clean air the regulated community of diesel owners, including contractors.
Dive Insight:
With new diesels meeting stricter emissions standards, the program should work itself out of a job as older engines are replaced or are taken out of service. The Diesel Technology Forum's policy director, Ezra Finkin, estimated that you could operate 60 diesels built in 2010 before you reached the level of pollutants put out by one rig from before 1998.
